In the News

SouthCoast Boardriders reguarly sends teams and individuals away to competitions all over the country and beyond. We are proud to be able to claim numerous National and South Island titles in age group and open events.

Surfers are able to compete in regular local ladders (see events), South Island circuit contests, Age group events, Scholastics trials, and National events. The latest calendars for the 2008/2009 will be posted under (events & activities) as they are made available.

Social members are welcome also and we enjoy the family groups who form a large part of our club. You dont have to be a surfer to join, just respect the ocean. The club has many boards and wetsuits that are available to members to borrow and members are able to hire the clubrooms for functions.

Welcome Girls & Boys to 2009!

Southcoastboardriders are pleased to be with you all and feed you what's  going on!!!

SCBRA has had a lot of their competetive members flying all over the country to various events over the past few weeks, with solid results comming through. The boys who went through to the mens Canterbury Champs on the 6/7 Feb came through with great results and have got South Coast Boardriders sitting at 3rd on the SISA ratings for all clubs.

A group of our boys are going over to the Westport GO for Gold  this weekend 27/28/29 Feb to try to pull our club up the ratings even more! Good luck guys!!!

Check out scholastics page for updates on what our juniors have been up to.

Our Southcoast surfers, mainly juniors, did us proud this year!!! Through the SISA , national and world kneeboarding circuit s and with our boys doing so well. we gained 3rd place overall on the SISA  ,which is great considerering the small number of competitive surfers who travel in the club, but  the juniors are helped financially  for their 1st  entry to each event they compete  in, which  is greatley appreciated.

13/12/08 - BILLABONG SOUTH ISLAND GROM SERIES #3 SUMNER BEACH CHRISTCHURCH

Sumner longboarders were the host club for this event and Johnny Warriner the contest director made the call to surf at Stoke Street Sumner. With high tide greeting the competitors first thing, a call was made to wait till 9am for the first heat to hit the water. The surfers were met with multiple radom peaks in the 0.5M - 1.0M  range depending on the tides.

In the premier event of this comp the Under 16 cadet boys were first out with our local South Coast groms Ben Bennett and Geordi Dearns progressing through their first round heats progressing to the semi finals. With the ever changing conditions both Ben and Geordi had to play the waiting game for choosing the best wave selections. Geordi was in the first semi and the waves that came through to him did not allow him to link more than a couple of manovures together which resulted in low scores. He ran out of time and placed third in his semi final.

Ben was in the second semi which also saw him sitting waiting for waves. He locked in an average score on his first wave which saw him sitting in third place up until the last minute when what was possibly the biggest set wave of the day came to him and he did two big hits and finished it off with a nice roundhouse cutty which saw him elvated to 1st!. Ben went on to win the final.

This editor must say , that  the highlight of the day was watching the micro - groms in the U12 event. The youngest was 7years old and was having the time of his life trimming along the ripples. They make easy work of catching their ten wave maximum!!! It was what this series was about; Participation and getting the young ones in learning what contests are about and bringing them through the junior ranks.

The South Island Grom Series is now completed and the 3 events points will be tallied to name the top placegetters overall.

These will be posted on the SNZ and SISA websites as soon as possible. Well down to Ben and Geordi for ensuring that South Coast Boardriders have been represented at all these events and to the parents for getting them there!

Full results are on the SNZ website, go to our links page.

20/11/08 - KIWI SURF MAGAZINE # 109

Cool spread of  our local grommets Tom Bracegirdle, Leroy Rust, Geordi Dearns & Ben Bennett in a groms freesurfing page as well as Danny Carse "showing how it's done" on another .

Also check out the board test pages, as QUARRY BEACH had a board tested with the feed back told by the surfers who rode it.

Big mag, small price.......... worth buying, and there's a free DVD with it, so it's worth it............ Well done crew!!!

15/11/08 - SOUTH ISLAND GROM SERIES #2 NEW BRIGHTON CHRISTCHURCH

Ben Bennett and Geordi Dearns(SC Juniors) travelled to  this event; which was contested in 2 foot random peaks. The event covered U16 -U12 divisions. The judges had a hard job with the infamous Christchurch North East fog rolling in, making it at times, less than 20 feet visability ; yet less than 100 metres away on the other side of the pier, Christchurch basked in  25+ sunny skies!!!

The contest was run as double elimination format for divisions U12 - U14 with the U16 boys splitting into a main final and a plate final. Ben prgressed through to the main final and gaining 2nd place to Taylor McNeill with Geordi Dearns surfing to 1st place in the plate final.

With this being the second of the SI grom series it's anyones title for the taking as the 3rd and final SI Grom series will be run over the 13/14 December 2008 as a mobile event "somewhere on the Canterbury coastline".

A mention must go to the Canterbury Scholastics fundraising team who ran the BBQ; Paul Zarifah who cooked all day and sourced the BEST sausages this editor has ever eaten at a comp!!! WELL DONE  hope you guys made some money!!!

With school ending for most of our competitive juniors, we hope that they will  be able to travel and  compete in the last event of this series. For more information on this series, please read about it below.

28/10/08 - WEKASTITCH CAPE CLASSIC WESTPORT 26/27 Oct 2008

Geordi Dearns won his first SISA circiut event of the year by taking out the Junior U18 final in what were very trying conditions. A solid messy 4ft swell left surfers having to make their wave selections count as the set waves rolled through Tauranga Bay. Geordi locked in a 3.30 first wave ride which had him sitting 4th position up until the last three minutes. His patience paid off though, as a nicely walling left hander came his way and he managed two big hits on it with the judges liking what they saw, he got a 6.0 average to win. Jimmy Crooks came in 2nd along with Tom Bracegirdle from south coast in 3rd and Blake McNelliss from westport 4th.Leroy Rust (SC) came in a close 2nd in the longboard division. Tom Bracegirdle also made the Cadets final gaining 2nd place and South Coast had Sam Parsons winning the Senior division and Dan Bartlett 4th.

South Coastboardriders have made a great start to the SISA circuit ratings for this season....

ISA JUDGING COURSE - Saturday 13 September2008

BrettHastie, ChrisPrentergast, LianeFlaws, StevenBennett, Nat Parsons and Leroy Rust all went and sat the International Surfing Associations level 1 Judges course. This means that South Coast Boardriders have qualified judges who have up to date knowledge and are able to judge at all SNZ/SISA sanctioned events and will be looking to gain Level 2 accreditation status by the end of the year. The course was well presented by Lee Ryan who has many years experience both competing and judging. They will be able to pass on their knowledge and encourage others to gain this international qualification which sets the bench mark for all events be that professional, National, Regional and club level.

Outside SCBA Clubhouse

Our clubrooms are situated right on St Clair beach with uninterupted views overlooking the pacific ocean. The end wall of our club has a fantastic surf scene painted by our late member Lindsay Crooks. The newly refurbished St Clair playground is alongside the club and is a popular spot for our younger members.

St Clair Esplanade  is a popular destination for many in both winter and summer. In the summer months, Oct - April the Hot Salt water pool is open and you can find a surf school operating.
